Open to All: Widening the Welcome
What does it mean to be a welcoming church? At Community Christian Church in Rochester, NY, we strive to live Jesus' message of welcome to include those who have been left outside of the church’s circle of love. In 1897 we included a woman on our first board of trustees; in 1907 we amended our constitution to guarantee one woman and one youth will always be voting members on the board; in 1995 we voted to become an open and welcoming church; and in 2002 we called an openly gay female pastor to our church. In the spring of 2014 our building accessibility project was completed.
Our church planned and implemented significant accessibility projects over the past ten years because we are committed to inclusion of all. Significant upgrades include: an interior ramp linking our sanctuary, fellowship hall and classrooms, an accessible family bathroom, modifying the sanctuary to provide accessible seating for wheelchairs, enlarged doorways providing wheelchair access to the pastor's office and church office and a power operated front entry door.
Below are some photos of the progress from construction beginning through the ribbon cutting ceremony in the spring of 2014.
